A highly popular teacher of philosophy, the late Professor Turbayne is often described by former students as a "consummate teacher" who made a lasting impression on them. He was also one of the most prolific and influential scholars of George Berkeley, the 18th Century Irish philosopher. He is perhaps best known as the author of the classic treatise, The Myth of Metaphor, first published by Yale University Press in 1962, followed by later editions and now available online at www.themythofmetaphor.info/colinmurrayturbayne.htm. An original and highly imaginative criticism of the Newtonian view of the universe as a machine, in it he suggests that the modern mind has been victimized by a powerful metaphor that has been taken literally, and that alternative models of explanation, notably the language model, can serve as beneficial approaches to an understanding of the world, knowledge and science. He published his last work, Metaphors for the Mind: The Creative Mind and Its Origins in 1990, in which he shows how modern theories of human thought and language arose from historical traditions of philosophy. Professor Turbayne's devotion to advancing understanding of Berkeley is reflected in the numerous articles he authored, his producing six major editions of Berkeley's works, and the creation and funding of the International Berkeley Essay Prize.

The Competition

The next deadline for submitting papers is November 1, 2006. For the 2006 competition, submitted papers should address some aspect of Berkeley’s philosophy. Essays should be new and unpublished and should be written in English and not exceed 5,000 words in length. All references to Berkeley should be to Luce/Jessop, and a MLA or similar standard for notes should be followed. Submissions are blind reviewed and will be judged by members of a review board selected by the Department of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. The winner will be announced March 1, 2007 and will receive a prize of $2,000. Copies of the winning essays are to be sent to the George Berkeley Library Study Center located in Berkeley's home in Whitehall, Newport, RI.

Submissions must be on paper (no electronic submission) and should be sent to:

       Chair, Department of Philosophy
University of Rochester
P.O. The competition targets high school (lyceum) students who are interested in physics and are willing to perform their own research works in physics. At times, their results are very interesting and valuable. The Institute of Physics (in the Polish Academy of Sciences) organises the fifteenth competition in the 2006/2007 academic year, and invites the participation of students based on the rules given below. The title of the competition expresses dreams of all the physicists, especially of young physicists. We, however, feel necessary to underline that the FIRST STEP is a quite independent competition, without any links to any Nobel institution.

GENERAL RULES:

1. All the high school (lyceum) students regardless of the country, type of the school etc. are eligible for the competition. The only conditions are that the school cannot be considered as a university college and the age of the participant should not exceed 20 years on March 31, 2007.

2. There are no restrictions concerning the subject matter of the papers, their level, methods applied etc. All these are left to the participants' choice. The papers, however, have to have a research character and deal with physics topics or topics directly related to physics.

3. Every participant can submit one or more papers but each paper should have only one author. The total volume (i.e. text + figures + captions + tables + references) of each paper should not exceed 25 normal typed pages (about 50,000 characters).

4. The papers will be refereed by the Organising Committee and the best will be awarded. The number of awarded papers is not limited. All the awards will be considered equivalent. The Authors of the awarded papers will be invited to the Institute of Physics (or to institutions co-operating with the Institute of Physics) for one month's research stay (the stays are scheduled for November 2007). The necessary stay expenses (without expenses for travel) will be paid by the organisers. Unfortunately, the travel expenses to and from Poland cannot be paid by the organisers and the winners will have to find some sponsors.

5. In addition to the regular awards the Organising Committee may establish a number of honourable mentions. The participants who won the honourable mention receive diplomas, but they are not invited to the research stay.

6. The participants should send their papers in two copies in English only by March 31, 2007 to:

Mrs. Maria Ewa Gorzkowska, M. A.
Secretary of the FIRST STEP
Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences
al. Lotników 32/46, (PL) 02-668 Warszawa

The Organizing Committee does not accept papers sent by e-mail.

7. Each paper should be attached with the filled Participation Form (empty form is available from our home page:www.ifpan.edu.pl/firststep).

8. IMPORTANT: The papers that do not conform to the above mentioned formal conditions are not evaluated. In particular that refers to the following papers:

* written in language different than English or written by hand,
* received after the deadline (the participants should have sent the papers out to the organisers early enough),
* submitted without the Participation Form,
* in which physics does not play a basic role,
* which do not have a research character (descriptive papers, essays, papers without any own results received by the Authors etc. are rejected in the first pass of evaluation)
* submitted by e-mail.

We hope that our competition will provide the pupils with an opportunity to compare their own achievements with the achievements of their colleagues from other countries. Also we hope that the stay of young scientists in our Institute will result in friendly relationship among them, what seems especially valuable for the future. On behalf of the Organising Committee:

On behalf of the Organising Committee:

Prof. Yohanes Surya
(Jakarta, Indonesia)
Vice-President of the Organising Committee Dr. Waldemar Gorzkowski
(Warsaw, Poland)
President of the Organising Committee

Additional information on the competition and on the proceedings of the past competitions can be obtained from Dr. Waldemar Gorzkowski - phone: (48)22-8435212; fax: (48)22-8430926; e-mail: gorzk@ifpan.edu.pl or from Prof. Dr. Yohanes Surya -- e-mail: yohaness@centrin.net.id or from any of the following Members of the International Advisory Committee (IAC):

Mr. Can ALTINELLER altineller@gmail.com (also Turkish)
Mrs. Tildash BITUOVA daryn_alm@nursat.kz (also Kazakh)
Prof. Dr. Hiroshi EZAWA hiroshi.ezawa@gakushuin.ac.jp (also Japanese)
Dr. Zbigniew GORTEL gortel@phys.ualberta.ca
Prof. Dr. Ibrahim GUNAL gunal@metu.edu.tr (also Turkish)
Dr. Avi I. By holding these events simultaneously, we hope that people with and without disabilities will appreciate each other’s excellence in skills. We also hope to emphasize the significance of both competitions. We firmly believe that this is an excellent opportunity to raise social awareness and the standards of vocational skills and training.

The WorldSkills Competition is the skills competition for young people up to 22 years old. Having hosted WorldSkills in Tokyo in 1970 and in Osaka in 1985, this is the third time Japan has hosted this special event.

The International Abilympics was launched in 1981 to commemorate the International Year of Disabled Persons, with the aim of improving vocational skills of persons with disabilities. This is the second time Japan has had the honor of hosting this event.

With the postwar “baby-boomer” generation turning 60 and beginning to retire in 2007 creating a shortage of skilled workers, these competitions will be a good chance to convey the importance of skilled professionals and to promote the efforts of young people at work and conscientious efforts of people with disabilities. We are also sure that hosting the competitions in our country in the early 21st century will be a great opportunity to promote Japan's wonderful skills both domestically and internationally.

Shizuoka Prefecture, the site of the event, promotes universal design and environmental accessibility. At the same time, it has a wide range of industries – from transportation equipment and semiconductor industries to bamboo crafts and other traditional goods. The area – home of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay – is rich in natural beauty and there are many time-honored hot springs resorts in Shizuoka, mainly on the Izu Peninsula. We believe that everyone who participates in ISF2007 will enjoy the natural beauty of the venue and its surroundings.

We truly hope that the International Skills Festival for All, Japan 2007 will be attended by as many participants as possible, and attract a high level of interest.

Further info visit skillfestival2007 official site.
<!--

The Teams who create the winning websites are eligible for prizes, and entries may be published in the popular ThinkQuest Library. The Competition is sponsored by the Oracle Education Foundation, a California non-profit corporation ("Foundation" or "Sponsor").

By participating in the Competition, each Team member accepts the conditions stated in these Rules, agrees to be bound by the decisions of the Judges (as defined below) and warrants that he/she is eligible to participate in the Competition.
Schedule

Team Enrollment opens:
August 15, 2006

Entry Submission Deadline:
3:00 pm EST on April 16, 2007

Winners Announced:
June 14, 2007

The Foundation may extend any Competition deadline upon three (3) days written notice to the Primary Coaches and will post any changes to those deadlines on the ThinkQuest website at http://www.thinkquest.org/.
Competition Requirements
To participate in the Competition, each Team must:

1. Enroll the Team. To enroll, the following steps must be taken:

1. Primary Coach registers a Team for the Competition by going to http://www.thinkquest.org/, or if the Primary Coach is a member of the Think.com online community, by logging in at http://www.think.com and creating a ThinkQuest project. In both cases, the Primary Coach must follow the online instructions, and acknowledge and agree to comply with and be bound by the terms and conditions of the Primary Coach's Competition Registration Agreement;
2. have the Primary Coach obtain permission from the parent or legal guardian of each Team member who is (a) under age 18, or (b) is older than age 18 but not the age of legal majority in his/her country and/or state of citizenship at the time of entry for him/her to participate in the Competition, and
3. on or before the Entry Submission Deadline, have someone with legal signing authority at the school at which the Primary Coach is employed, generally a principal, head teacher, or other administrator (an "Authorized Person"), acknowledge and agree, on behalf of his/her school, to comply with and be bound by the terms and conditions of the School Entry Submission Agreement.

2. Submit the entry. A completed entry ("Entry") consists of the following TWO items:

1. The collection of website files the Team has produced and successfully uploaded to the ThinkQuest server (the "Website"), and
2. A completed online form providing requested information about the Team and its Website, accessed by logging in to www.thinkquest.org ("Site Profile").

Teams that enroll but do not submit an Entry by the Entry Submission Deadline will be disqualified.

3. Wait as the Judges make their final decisions. An independent panel of judges ("Judges") will evaluate the Website and Site Profile, in accordance with the Evaluation Criteria, which is incorporated in and made a part of these Official Rules. Winners will be announced on the ThinkQuest website on June 14, 2007. Judges' scores will not be posted or publicized.

Each decision of the Foundation and each decision of any of the Judges, shall, in all respects, be final, binding, and not be subject to review.
In the event one or more Teams misses a Competition deadline due solely to a confirmed technical failure or malfunction of the Foundation's online submission system, computer equipment, software programs, or user interface server (as determined by the Foundation in its sole discretion), then the Foundation may, but is not obligated to, extend such deadline in its sole discretion, upon notice to the Primary Coach of such Team(s).
Age Divisions

For students, the minimum age to participate is 9 and the maximum age to participate is 19. Teams will compete in one of three age divisions:

* Age 12 and under
* Age 15 and under
* Age 19 and under

Teams are permitted to include student members of different ages. The age of the oldest student on the Team as of April 16, 2007 will determine the age division in which the Team will compete. All of the students on a Team must be no younger than age 9 and no older than age 19 on April 16, 2007.
Team Requirements

Team Composition:

* A Team must be comprised of at least three and no more than six student members and one Primary Coach (each, a "Team").
* A Team may also include one Assistant Coach (optional). Teams using Think.com as a collaboration environment may be required to have additional teachers participating in the Think.com project workspace. However, these additional teachers are not considered members of the ThinkQuest team and are not eligible for any prizes unless they are also registered as either the Primary Coach or the Assistant Coach for the team.
* A Team may have no more than two student members who have been on winning ThinkQuest teams in the past.
* Teams may be comprised of students and coaches from within a single classroom or from many different classrooms, schools, communities, or countries around the world. Multi-location Teams and multi-language Websites are encouraged (please see the Evaluation Criteria for more detail).
* If information about any Team member submitted to the Foundation is found to be an intentional misrepresentation, the entire Team will be disqualified.

Coach Requirements:

Coaches may provide guidance, administration, and practical assistance to their Teams. Coaches may help students form Teams and locate resources (human, technical, and information). Coaches may NOT work directly on any portion of the Website.

The Primary Coach must:

* Be employed by and working in a teaching or resource capacity (e.g., teacher, librarian, technology coordinator, etc.) at an Eligible School. An Eligible School is an accredited school that is owned or operated by a government or local school board, or an accredited, non-profit, private school that is tax-exempt under U.S. Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), or the non-U.S. equivalent of a Section 501(c)(3) school. Employees of schools that do not meet this requirement are not eligible to be Primary Coaches of Teams participating in the Competition.
* Be at least age 21, OR the age of legal majority in his/her country/state of citizenship, whichever is older, on the day of the Entry Submission Deadline.
* Acknowledge and agree to comply with and be bound by the terms and conditions of the Primary Coach's Competition Registration Agreement.
* Obtain a signed permission form from the parent/legal guardian of each student member of the Team if that student is (a) under age 18, or (b) is older than age 18 but not the age of legal majority in his/her country and/or state of citizenship before submitting any information to the. (See Coach Resources for a sample permission form.)
* Provide an active email address during coach enrollment and maintain this email address throughout the Competition, so that he/she may act as the point of contact for the Team.
* For the Primary Coach of a winning Team, complete the Primary Coach's Affidavit of School Eligibility, attesting that his/her school is an Eligible School, prior to acceptance of any applicable prize.

The Assistant Coach, if any, must:

* Be at least age 20 on the day of the Entry Submission Deadline OR have won an Age Division or Honorable Mention award in a prior ThinkQuest competition.
* Not be a student member of any current Team.

Student Requirements:

Student Team members are responsible for the design and development of their Website, including the selection, research, and development of its content. Each student must make significant contributions to the success of the Team and be a full participant in the development of the Website.

Each student must:

* Be no younger than age 9 and no older than age 19 on April 16, 2007.
* Either (1) be actively enrolled as a student at an Eligible School, or (2) be home-schooled or enrolled in a Non-Eligible School, so long as he/she is a member of a Team whose Primary Coach is an employee of an accredited school.
* Be a member of only one Team.

Evaluation Criteria

Teams should review the Evaluation Criteria thoroughly before developing their Entries. The Evaluation Criteria were developed in coordination with the Buck Institute for Education, Stanford Center for Innovations in Learning, and Sara Armstrong Consulting, and will be used to evaluate all Competition Entries.
Topic Categories

Entries must be submitted in one of the following twelve categories, which correspond to the top-level navigation categories in the ThinkQuest Library:

* Arts & Entertainment
* Books & Literature
* Business & Industry
* Computers & the Internet
* Geography & Travel
* Health & Safety
* History & Government
* Math
* Philosophy, Religion & Mythology
* Science & Technology
* Social Sciences & Culture
* Sports & Recreation

To view examples of topics in each category, click on the links above. The examples have been included only to spark imagination. Teams can also visit the ThinkQuest Library for more ideas.
Entry Requirements

Content:

* Websites (or content from websites) previously submitted in ThinkQuest competitions are ineligible for submission.
* Websites may not contain any Objectionable material (as defined in Section IX of the Primary Coach's Competition Registration Agreement), including but not limited to profanity, vulgar language, or statements that promote hatred towards an individual, race, or community.
* Websites may not contain any commercial content that promotes the sale of an item directly via the Website, or by hyperlinks to external commercial sites selling products or services.

Use of Copyrighted Materials:

Websites and all content contained on or in the websites (collectively "Website Content") must be the original creation of the Team and must contain complete and accurate citations and/or permissions for all sources used. By submitting an Entry, Team members represent that they have the unrestricted right to submit the Website Content and the Website Content does not infringe upon any third party's proprietary or other rights.

For purposes of these Rules, "plagiarism" means:

(a) copying words or ideas from someone else and attributing those words or ideas as one's own;
(b) copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit;
(c) failing to put a direct quote in quotation marks;
(d) giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation;
(e) changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit;
(f) any copying of another person's work that results in the Entry not being substantially the original work of the Team members, regardless of whether the copied work is cited; and/or
(g) use of website templates without giving credit to the original creator/owner of the template.

The Foundation takes plagiarism very seriously. Any plagiarism or copyright violation will result in an Entry's disqualification.

While students are encouraged to seek guidance from coaches, parents, friends, published sources and other collaborators via the internet, students must do their own work and must not permit any person (other than student members of the Team) to perform such work and must not copy the materials (words, images, data, audio and video files, and other media) of others, except as permitted below:

* Websites may include material that was created by another person before January 1, 1918 so long as an accurate citation is provided within the Website.
* Websites may include material that was created by another person on or after January 1, 1918 so long as written permission to quote or use such material is obtained as required by the creator or owner of such intellectual property AND an accurate citation is provided within the Website. Teams must also be able to provide a copy of such permission to the Foundation, if requested.

Student Safety & Privacy:

In order to comply with the Foundation's efforts to prevent the publication of personally identifiable information in the Library, Website and Site Profile content may NOT contain any of the following:

* Student last names
* Student email addresses or personal contact information (generic Team or coach email addresses are acceptable)
* Guestbooks, discussion boards, forums, chat areas (including links on a ThinkQuest website to these types of forums on external websites)

The Foundation may, in its sole discretion, remove any such items from Entries once all judging has been completed. If this information cannot be removed, the Foundation may refuse to post an Entry in the ThinkQuest Library.

Language:

The Website and Site Profile, as well as other communications submitted to ThinkQuest, must be in English. Translation of the Website into additional languages is acceptable; however, Judges will evaluate the English language version of the Website.
Although the Website may be translated into multiple languages, file and directory names must be in basic ASCII format (no accents or non-Western characters).
Technical Requirements

Supported Technologies:

Websites must be built to run within a browser:

* Browser-based technologies such as Flash, Java script, dhtml, style sheets, and applets are supported.
* Server-based technologies such as PHP, Perl, SSI, Java, CGI, and FrontPage extensions* are NOT supported.

*FrontPage may be used to design and build a Team's Website, but FrontPage's server-side extensions and publishing utilities are not supported.
Websites should be able to be viewed on different browsers and platforms and at different connection speeds. Teams are encouraged to test their Websites on a variety of machines and browsers.

Server Usage:

All final Website Content must be uploaded to the ThinkQuest server. Website Content cannot be hosted on an external server. Each Team will be allotted a maximum of 50 mb of ThinkQuest server space for its Website. Teams whose Websites exceed the 50 mb after the Entry Submission deadline will be disqualified. Disqualified Teams will be notified of such disqualification.

Teams will have two methods for uploading files to the ThinkQuest server: the ThinkQuest web-based file upload tool and WebDAV. Both methods are fully explained in Help. Teams will not be provided SFTP or shell access.
A Team will be disqualified if any member gains unauthorized access to, or misuses, the ThinkQuest website or server by gaining access to areas that the Team does not have the explicit right to use or for using the server for purposes not related to the development and deployment of Entries for the Competition.

Program Tools:
The Foundation may make available certain software tools or other materials (Program Tools) for use by Teams in the Competition. Primary Coaches are responsible for insuring that Program Tools (if any) are used by Teams in accordance with these Rules and any specific terms accompanying the Program Tools, including any applicable Software License Terms for such Program Tools. Primary Coaches are also responsible for insuring removal of Program Tools from computer systems upon completion of the Competition and/or termination of a Team's participation in the Competition. A Team will be disqualified if any member modifies or reverse-engineers any Software, or uses any Software in a manner inconsistent with the Terms.

ThinkQuest Banner:

When a Team's Website is published in the ThinkQuest Library, the ThinkQuest banner will display on each page of the Website. See Help for more information.
Awards & Prizes

Age Division Awards and School Awards:
For each age division, the Judges will select 1st Place, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place winners, and seven Honorable Mentions from among all eligible Entries received for such category (collectively, the "Age Division Awards"). For each team that wins an Age Division Award, the Eligible School at which that Team's Primary Coach is employed will receive a School Award ("School Award").

TRIO Special Recognition Award:
The Foundation will award one special recognition prize to the TRIO team that receives the highest score from among all eligible entries received from TRIO teams; provided, however, that if a TRIO team wins an Age Division Award or a Global Perspectives Award, no TRIO Special Recognition Award will be awarded and the TRIO team will be awarded only the Age Division Award or Global Perspectives Award, as applicable. A TRIO team is a Team comprised of a simple majority of students enrolled in the TRIO Quest program sponsored by the University of Washington and the Office of Post Secondary Education in the U.S. Office of Education.

Global Perspectives Award:
Judges will select one Entry that demonstrates excellence in Global Perspectives (as defined in the Evaluation Criteria).

Prizes:

Each Team member (students, Primary Coach, and Assistant Coach if any) whose Entry is selected for an Age Division Award, Global Perspectives Award, or TRIO Special Recognition Award, and each Eligible School that is selected for a School Award, will receive a prize ("Prize"). In order to accept the Prize, ALL members of a winning Team (students, Primary Coach, and Assistant Coach if any) will be required to sign a Winner's Affidavit of Eligibility and Release and, where permitted, a publicity release. The ENTIRE Team may be disqualified if ANY member of the Team does not submit a valid affidavit and release to the Foundation by the stated deadline. Winners and Chaperones, if applicable, who attend ThinkQuest Live must sign a Travel Release.

In addition, winners attending ThinkQuest Live with a Chaperone must submit the following:

1. A Chaperone's Release,
2. A Chaperone Designation Form, and
3. In addition, any Team is eligible to win one or more awards. Members of Teams that win two or more awards that include attendance at ThinkQuest Live will only be eligible to attend the single ThinkQuest Live event associated with the Competition in which they received the awards. Now using a franchise concept since 2005, it establishes the BraunPrize also as a national design competition.

The BraunPrize franchise concept supports the training of designers in their respective countries with a special emphasis on providing practical experience in industry. One particular objective is to provide a clear profile for what is expected of industrial designers faced with tough international competition.

Another intention is to strengthen the specific national appreciation of product and design quality and communicate it to the public.

The national organizers conduct the design competitions independently. In other words, they are responsible for the actual competition, the judging and the production of documents for the national event in consultation with Braun Corporate Design and the BraunPrize project management. A major criterion for permission to use the Braun and BraunPrize logos is preserving the quality and integrity of the competition.

The best entries are distinguished by being included as “national contribution“ in the final BraunPrize exhibition. The BraunPrize jury decides which of these entries should be included in the international competition and presented in the BraunPrize exhibition.

The winner of the national competition will receive in addition to BraunPrize Franchise cup also the invitation to the international BraunPrize Award Ceremony at Braun in Kronberg. This includes flight and accommodation as well as a visit at the Braun Design Department in Kronberg.

Please find information concerning other national competitions within the next BaunPrize News.

The BraunPrize Exhibition helps raise the profile of young designers
Along with the prize money and the press coverage, the BraunPrize Exhibition is an important aspect of the support which the competition provides for young designers. A large number of visitors with an interest in design have already seen the BraunPrize Exhibition in Germany and in many other European countries. The exposure offered by the exhibition frequently results in valuable contacts being made.

In the case of the 2005 BraunPrize, for example, the exhibition enjoyed a highly successful tour which took place in the following locations:

1. September 2005

Braun Headquarters in Kronberg, Germany

1. September/October 2005

Politecnico di Torino, Lingotto Building, Turin, Italy

1. Nov. 2005 – Jan. 2006

Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany

1. Mai – Juni 2006

Centro Cultural de Belém, Lissabon, Portugal

Locations visited by previous BraunPrize Exhibitions include Berlin, Hanover, Frankfurt, Essen, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Munich, Jablonec nad Nisou (Czech Republic), Oslo (Norway), Stockholm (Sweden), Barcelona (Spain), London (UK), Budapest (Hungary), Helsinki (Finland), Vienna (Austria) while the photo exhibition has ventured as far afield as Aspen (USA) and Chile.

In future, we would like to take the BraunPrize Exhibition beyond Europe to promote greater international contact between young designers and businesses interested in using their services.

Dates for your diary:
Closing date for entries for the 2007 BraunPrize:
January 31, 2007

Information about the entry conditions can be found at www.braunprize.com

Award Ceremony and opening of the BraunPrize Exhibition:
September 2007

Source here.

<!--
